July August 2021

From our Executive Director, Barbara Loh:

Heat and rain, rain and heat. It has been an interesting summer for weather.

Despite it being the dog days of summer and the latest challenges with the Delta variant, we are hard at work with some new technological and other exciting initiatives to keep our listeners having all the latest options to hear our broadcasts and to bring our non-profit broadcasting service to even more listeners.

Stay tuned for our September newsletter to fill you in on all the latest!!

  • The Summer Senior Class at Baystate Health is back in session and Valley Eye Radio is bringing the audio from their virtual presentations to our listeners who will be able to share in the information provided by their experts.

“The Balancing Act” leads off the “course curriculum” with a presentation by Nancy Densmore, PTA and Michelle Lantaigne, OT from Baystate Rehabilitation Care as well as Baystate Medical Center Injury Prevention Program’s Ida Konderwicz, RN, and Danyel Adams, PharmD, Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at Baystate Medical Center. They spoke on the subject of preventing falls and what our listeners can do to improve their balance.

Other programs from the Senior Class will include “The Burning Facts About Skin Cancer and Melanoma” by Dr. Richard Arenas, Chief, Division of Surgical Oncology at Baystate Surgical Oncology and Breast Specialists and “Beyond Sugar: Diabetes Solutions” with Dr. Chelsea Gordner, endocrinologist at Baystate Endocrinology.

    ● Thanks to a new collaboration with Community Action Pioneer Valley, we were able to bring to our listeners some very timely information on the recent changes to the Child Tax Credit from their “Money Matters” series. We look forward to bring more of their presentations to our listeners in the future.

    ● With the assistance of Storrs Library, the Longmeadow Adult Center, the Longmeadow Historical Society and others, Valley Eye Radio rebroadcast audio recordings from a number of presentations including "Liberty’s Diaspora: Black Women’s Routes to Liberation in the Age of the American Revolution", “The Adventures of Ben Franklin”, “Ollie's Law: Leading the Way in the Protection of Animals”, “Soldiers of Production: Springfield Armory In WWII” and “Stories from the Archives: People from Perkins School for the Blind”. Thanks to all involved!

    ● Valley Eye Radio expanded our collaboration with the non-profit CISA (Community Interested in Sustaining Agriculture) with the presentation of their “Field Notes” program from 2021.

This (usually) live storytelling event shines a light on the many ways that local food and farming have impacted lives – in ways big and small – across western Massachusetts. All stories are true tales, pitched, practiced, and performed by community members of all backgrounds and abilities.

    ● Don’t forget to check out our website www.valleyeyeradio.org for the latest information on our programming schedule, how to volunteer or donate to support our mission. You can even hear a sample of what we broadcast!
